My Wisdom Isn’t Knowledge, It’s Inspiration
I can’t answer everything, but I can spark my daughter’s curiosity
I wish I could give my daughters better answers to their questions.
I usually waver between feigned confidence and, “Oh, erm. I’m not sure.”
Truthfully:
- I’m not sure why some animals reproduce asexually
- Or why the Milky Way smells like rum and raspberries
- I’m not sure why we can eat mouldy cheese but not bread (and no we can’t try “even just a little bit”)
Not having the answers to these questions weighed on me.
That I didn’t know everything a so-called great-dad might.
But then, my dad didn’t have all the answers and was mostly great.
That was enough for me.
So maybe being mostly great is enough in the eyes of a child.
After years of being an aspiring great-dad, I’ve learned it doesn’t matter.
Because half the fun is not having an answer, while the other half is that we can find out together.
