Now It’s Really Spring!

In Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, we are blessed with four distinct seasons, and observing the changes from one season to another is a ritual for me. It strengthens my connection with Nature, one of the four essential connections of the Heartspoken Life.

I do mark the Spring Equinox, but for me, Spring really starts when I’ve finished two annual tasks — one I hate and one I love: cleaning my seed birdfeeders before I put them away for the summer and putting out my hummingbird feeders to greet the first Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds that arrive from Central America.

I pair these tasks because the happy anticipation of my hummingbirds takes the drudgery out of scrubbing feeders. I learned this pairing trick from Gretchen Rubin’s wonderful book Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of our Everyday Lives.

My tasks are done. Spring has begun.

What signals the beginning of Spring for you?
