Obesity: Physical Manifestation of Socioeconomic Malady
In June 2021 the National Center for Health Statistics reported that obesity among Americans was 41.9% of the adult population. This statistic is merely academic until you travel by air and the passenger next to you raises the armrest to accommodate their body mass, imposing on your space.
There are many causes of obesity; excessive caloric intake, media influences, genetics, medications, and stress. Taken in concert, obesity is an abnormal unhealthy condition.
Now consider “The Fat Cats.” These are wealthy, powerful individuals associated with business and politics many of whom are motivated by greed. Their ambitions can blind them to their societal responsibilities.
In both instances, overindulgence threatens the health and well-being of individuals. In the case of obesity, one’s physical life is in danger juxtaposed to the Fat Cats who threaten equity and social life within a nation.
