Overwhelmed by Complexity? Watch the Cows and Be Peaceful

Simplicity is all around you

My photo of cows

It’s easy to think that grazing cows and complexity have nothing in common. It’s wrong.

I was walking with my 20-month-old baby when this thought stuck with my mind: there is a relationship between complexity and peace. That relationship is the equilibrium.

The photo above shows ordinary moments of complexity. Cows are living —so complex —organisms, and their ordinary moments are peaceful equilibrium.

At that moment, I perceived the profound meaning of the equilibrium. However complex the underlying mechanisms may be, the equilibrium makes them a simple whole.

The sense of completeness on my son’s face as he watched the cows confirmed the value of my mission as the complexity melter.

Complexity is found in the description of things, not within things that, on their own, are simple wholes, like the grazing cows.
