Pete Hegseth for Defense Secretary?

We might need someone with a clear head for this job

For the record: I’m an alcoholic.

Believe me, this is a classic alcoholic thing to say: “After such-&-such happens, I’ll quit drinking.”

Pete Hegseth says if he becomes Secretary of Defense he will quit drinking. Good luck with that. Ask any alcoholic, active or recovering, about the chances of success for someone who promises to quit drinking “after such-and-such happens.”

I have no idea about TV personality Hegseth’s ability to manage budgets, despite his history of financial mismanagements. Or questionable beliefs, such as his having said that women shouldn’t serve in combat. Or his personal qualifications, despite multiple divorces, accusations of rape and sexual misconduct.

But I do know the potential catastrophe, for our nation, of having a Secretary of Defense with a public history of drinking problems who promises to quit . . . after he’s confirmed.

C’mon now, Trump team.
