When you first think about it, poor eyesight might not seem like a gift at all. You can’t read fine print without squinting, even when you’re wearing your glasses. When you take your glasses off and put them down, you can’t always find them. You can’t do any number of things that those with good eyesight can do.

But I’ve discovered something about my poor eyesight, something that allows me to call it a wonderful gift: the crumbs on the floor, the weeds in the garden, the dark clouds in the sky — either I don’t see them or they look good to me.

And if they really aren’t good, I can always count on someone — some good-looking person — to tell me so.
