Searching For More Spiritually
And perhaps finding it in Orthodoxy
I re-read Timothy Ware’s The Orthodox Church: An Introduction to Eastern Christianity.
I first read it years ago in seminary.
Back then it was an assignment. Though interesting and informative, it didn’t have much personal impact.
This time was different.
I find myself amid an unexpected mid-life exploration of Orthodoxy and a spiritual craving for more.
Something mystical and mysterious.
Something beautiful.
Yet also cogent.
As Ware writes:
Theology, mysticism, spirituality, moral rules, worship, art: these things must not be kept in separate compartments. (Timothy Ware, The Orthodox Church, pg. 200) Books by Kallistos Ware (Author of The Orthodox Church) (goodreads.com)
I couldn’t agree more.
Ironically, I’m drawn to a tradition that’s the antithesis of the theologically and socially liberal values and perspectives I’ve come to embrace.
Perhaps, that’ll ultimately prevent me from becoming Orthodox.
Or maybe I’ll be an outlier, as I’ve tended to be throughout my spiritual journey.
For now, I keep searching.
