Shortform Word Limit Confusion

When I first discovered Shortform posts, I read its purpose was to avoid the “Read more” link.

The rule is to write under 150 words. But that doesn’t work in all cases. Medium support confirmed, saying you need to limit it to 30 words if you want to meter it to earn revenue.

In my opinion, that’s unreasonable. Thirty words aren’t enough to have sufficient value! Even Burk, an editor of The Shortform publication, said they only accept posts with standalone value. That makes perfect sense.

An alternative solution is to eliminate a title and make the first sentence bold. That may change in the future since Medium may modify its algorithm.

I think “The Shortform” is a terrific publication for stories limited to 150 words. We just have to understand that potential readers still will need to click “Read more.”
