Why do we sink ourselves into the silky smooth pages of a novel or the pale ambient glow of our Kindle?

We want to be spellbound. We want to immerse ourselves in the knowledge that our experience will be elevated from the first page to the last.

As authors, we aspire to create worlds (whether based on reality or not) enhanced and supported by our choice of words and their arrangement.

Take this story opening:

‘Diaries are kept by men: strong brushstrokes on smooth mulberry paper, gathered into sheaves and tied with ribbon and placed in a lacquered box.’

(The Fox Woman — Kij Johnson)

Every word regales our sense of vision and texture while also conveying this isn’t a culture where diaries are kept by women.

The author has made specific word choices to enhance our experience while whetting our appetite for more.
