Room 309 of the Horton Grand Hotel in San Diego is famous for ghostly stories. The infamous gambler Roger Whitaker, known for his cheating habits, met a tragic end in this room in the mid-1800s.

Escaping from angry creditors, he was fatally shot while hiding in the room’s armoire. Since then, guests have reported unsettling paranormal activities.

The room is a hotbed of mysterious activity: beds shaking without cause, lights flickering, items moving on their own, and the armoire door eerily opening and closing at night. These phenomena are believed to be the work of Whitaker’s restless spirit, still in the room.

Despite his misdeeds in life, Whitaker’s presence in death is viewed as harmless but active, frequently making his presence known.

Room 309, with its haunted reputation, continues to intrigue guests and paranormal enthusiasts, adding a terrifying chapter to the history of the Horton Grand Hotel.
