Quite a tangled mess of frayed leaves, eh? Photo from Wikimedia commons

Just looking at a Welwitschia might make you want to give up on life.

Its scientific name is Welwitschia mirabilis.

Welwitschia ‘miserablis would suit it better, no?

But wait —

Welwitschia comes with its own surprises:

✨It can live for 2000 years (you would become a hardcore pessimist too, wouldn’t you, if you lived that long?)

✨All its close botanical relatives are extinct (another reason to be miserable)

✨It is present on the national coat of arms of Namibia (yay!)

✨Welwitschia has exactly two leaves. It will live for two millennia, but you can’t get it to grow a third one.

✨Recently it has become increasingly important as a tourist attraction for its host countries, Namibia and Angola.

Cheer up, old buddy! You got reasons to be happy!

Nope, not cheering up anytime soon (Photo from Wikimedia)
