There is a common belief that multitasking is efficient and increases productivity, but is this true?

Imagine these scenarios:

You are clearing the dishes while listening to a podcast.

You are in a meeting while replying to emails.

The first is a good kind of multitasking that does not require your brain to focus on more than one task at a time, while the second is called switch-tasking.

This is a bad kind of multitasking. It requires you to switch from one task to another, making your brain focus on multiple tasks at a time.

Switching between tasks does not increase productivity, time, or efficiency rather, it decreases them.

Focus on one task at a time, and then move on to the next when it’s completed. You will become more productive, efficient, and have more time left.
