The author highlights an important issue here, which is the vicious cycle of abuse. She showed how Lily, the protagonist, decides to break the pattern of abuse before it breaks her and her daughter.
She had seen her mother suffer violence and hated her father, but this would not be her daughter’s case.
She wouldn’t let her see her mother go through what she had to. I loved her for that.
Sometimes, however difficult the circumstances become, as much as we love the person who hurts us — leaving them and their brutality is the only way to get out of the pattern.
There is no justification for violence.
