Epigenetic clocks have the potential to serve as aging biomarkers. They measure DNA methylation in gene sets chosen with the help of machine-learning approaches. Some epigenetic clocks predict chronological age, while others focus on biological age.

Several interesting insights generated by epigenetic clock research include:

  1. Epigenetic age acceleration (higher predicted epigenetic age than chronological age) is associated with negative health outcomes, including mortality risk and increased incidence of cardiovascular disorders.
  2. The rate of epigenetic aging may vary during certain periods of life.
  3. Environmental and lifestyle factors may affect the rate of epigenetic aging.

Epigenetic clocks can both predict age and offer insight into the aging process. However, the field is still developing, and many technologies have not been approved in humans. Therefore, it is recommended to remain cautious with regard to anti-aging interventions and to prioritise eating healthy, sleeping well, and remaining active and socially connected.
