Too Tight

He held me too close
He held me too tight
Way too tight

I built a wall inside me
A shield
Against his apologies

After
After a Slap
After a shove

It was nothing I did
It was everything I did

A look in the wrong direction
A look at my reflection

So I took to looking at the ground
No more looking around

Couldn’t look him in the eye
Made him wonder why

Another slap
Another push

Down a flight of steps
Wind taken out of me
Hit bottom, lost my breath

He stood over me
Apologized
Finally, I did look into his eyes

Had to get out
Had no doubt

If I didn’t get out then
Never would
Never could

Early the next morning
I left with nothing
But had everything

I could breathe again
