What is form?

Do you keep a diary? How is your content ordered? By date? Those date-ordered entries make your diary writing a form.

★ Penning a collection of short stories? Then the form is just that … a collection of short stories.

★ Spinning a collection of supernatural tales? We have both form (collection) and genre (supernatural).

★ Blending epic tales of myth and legend spanning multiple generations? We have form (saga) and genre (fantasy).

★ Writing a memoir set way back in time? Are your characters and story make-believe? Then we have fictionalised historical memoirs.

And …

A publisher may group a collection of stories from different authors into an anthology. The anthology becomes the form.

When prospective publishers ask what we write, our understanding of form becomes a potent marketing tool.
