People generally don’t have a concrete strategy for dealing with indecision in their productivity systems. This is a mistake. Indecision can cause distress and stymie action.

A simple but effective model to deal with indecision is the 3-Is method. The 3-Is are:

  1. Identification — If you don’t know what the end is, you can’t get there. A good decision is often facilitated by knowing the right issue to address. Ask yourself or others questions to identify project goals.
  2. Ideation — Generate options and filter them. Use brainstorming, mind mapping, or brain swarming to figure out possible outcomes and solutions. Once you have multiple ideas, determine the most viable plan of action.
  3. Implementation — Finalize your choice and act on it. This follow-through is crucial, else, you won’t learn whether or not your choices are suitable.

Whenever you face indecision, implement the 3-Is method to overcome it.
