Why I Started My Substack Newsletter Although I Was a Top Writer On Medium

I started my Substack newsletter in the fall of 2022 because I didn’t want to be at the mercy of algorithm changes on platforms like Medium.

At the time, I belonged to the top 1,000 Medium writers and earned about $1,000/month, which was a massive milestone, but I knew I needed something more sustainable. So, I decided to focus on building an email list I owned and creating a content flywheel.

Substack became the perfect foundation for my content flywheel and funnel. I used Medium (and YouTube) to bring people onto my email list. The Online Writing Club was my way of helping writers kickstart their journey, grow their audience, and eventually monetize their writing.

At first, I wasn’t even thinking about making it a paid newsletter. I planned to monetize through coaching and boot camps. But as the newsletter grew, it naturally evolved into a paid offering.

Shortform is dedicated to quick, interesting reads. If you are looking for some tiny nuggets of knowledge, easy entertainment, maybe a laugh or two😂. Shortform is designed for consuming content when short on time, energy, or waiting for a bus that’s always infuriatingly late.
