If you’re having relationship troubles, going to couples counseling is a good idea.

Going to couples counseling with a narcissist, however, is not.

First, there is an entire generation of professional counselors out there who are uneducated in personality disorders. Thus, a narcissist has an easy time setting themselves up as the victim, and you as the one with the problem.

Because of this, you risk being retraumatized by the very one you’re seeking help from.

Also, inexperienced therapists will often fall for a narcissist’s charming façade and then try to “both sides” any session, focusing on your reaction to the abuse instead of the abuse itself.

This opens the door for a narcissist to further hurt you.

So, in order to get the help you need, it’s important to still go to therapy.

But go alone.
