American Express Paid me $75 after I posted an article about them on Medium. And then offered me a bonus on top of that.

So I’m reading my emails the other day and I see one from Amex. It was titled “Congratulations, you can now start earning a special bonus” which was compelling enough for me to open it. I had been approved for the Amex Blue Cash Preferred Card about 3 weeks ago and I wrote an article about it with all the cash back details, so I wondered what they meant by “special bonus”.

Helping other people find good deals can also be good for my finances too, if done correctly.

Essentially the 6% cash back on groceries and 3% back on gas is what enticed me to get that particuler card. But what I didn’t know at the time was that I would get an additional “special bonus”of +5% cash back bonus per dollar spent on eligible purchases at U.S. restaurants for 3 months, on top of the $75 they paid me because some fabulous human being used my referral link and was approved.

Now it is true that they didn’t send me a check or a Paypal payment. Of course it was a statement credit. But since I am trying to rack up $3000 in spending within the next 6 months to earn the $300 sign up bonus, I am taking anything I would normally pay with cash and using the card instead. I then use the cash to pay off the card. So even if it is just a statement credit, that is money I don’t have to pay them for what I was already going to buy anyway.

Most of you will recognize this as affiliate marketing. Some of you might not know about this. Rest assured that word of mouth marketing is so powerful that almost ALL major corporations are doing it. Whenever you are on the website of any small, medium or large company, scroll down to the bottom of the page and look for a link similar to “affiliate Program” or Partner Program”. Or it might happen the way Amex and Discover did it for me. They outright put a link with my special tracking code smack on the first page of my account when I logged in and made sure it popped up front and center every time I log in.

Some companies will only allow certain people to market their services, like people who have a blog with thousands of subscribers or people with at least 500 followers or more. Ha ha — I am no longer eligible for the Amazon affiliate program because I don’t have more than 500 followers and the ones that I do have are behind a paywall (hello Medium!)

Luckily Discover and Amex don’t keep all the goodies for the Instagram influencer crowd. They know where the money lies -in signups from ordinary people like me and you handing out shout outs like its candy.

They say you can email all of your friends your link or you can post it on websites where you are allowed to. Of course, you need to be careful not to spray it around anywhere your fingers can type, because that would be considered spam. And you must disclose that by clicking on the link and getting approved you will receive earn “reward dollars” at no extra cost to the person who applies.

Today when I logged in to my Amex account, I found out that they are now allowing me to earn $25 in “referral dollars on my business card as well. I’m pretty sure that wasn’t there before. Not as much as the Blue Cash Preferred card, but I’m Ok with that. So, log into your credit card accounts to see if there is a “referral link” and you can do this too.

Telephone, telegram, -tell all of your friends what you just did.

And then send them the link so they can do it too

“Oooh look what I just got -a new AmEx card”

You can apply for an American Express Card with this link. We can both get rewarded if you’re approved! http://refer.amex.us/EULAMBPuX?XLINK=MYCP

Yes, that is an affiliate link, but it won’t cost you any more than it would cost without the link. As in ZERO. Zilch. Nada. If you have gotten even a little bit of value out of me taking the time to explain how it works, using my link would really make you a fabulous person. Go ahead — try it and get paid.
