Since joining Fiverr in 2020, I’ve managed to make almost $10,000 on the platform.

It is by no means the best! But if you’re looking for some consistent side-hustle income, then Fiverr is still a great option, despite what the critiques say.

I want to preface by saying this article is not meant to be a ‘boast’ or a ‘show-off’ but instead a practical guide that shows the steps I took to make some extra cash.

Let’s get into it.

Why I Chose Fiverr.com

There are a whole range of ‘content-mill’ websites out there. Which one to get started on can be a difficult decision to make:

  • Fiverr
  • Upwork
  • Freelancer
  • Legiit
  • LinkedIn
  • Contra

But if you’re looking for a platform where the buyers come to you, and it requires very little if any promotional work on your end, then Fiverr is the best one for you.

I was at University at the time I started my Fiverr profile. It was recommended by someone in the Careers department.

All I had to do was set up a profile and create a gig.

How to Create a Gig

On Fiverr, Gigs are essentially the thing that you will be doing for the client. In my case, it is writing.

When you click ‘create a new gig’ you will be prompted with some questions. Fill out the fields about what you do and add some keywords you wish to rank for on the Fiverr profile.

Then just fill out your pricing and description. The most important thing to note is don’t low-ball yourself. You might be thinking that if you start at a super-low price, people will want to hire you.

But in my case, I found more clients at higher prices. This is because you’re seen as more legitimate.

If you’re not sure what to charge for your service, have a look at some people offering similar things. Choose three of them and then your price should be the average.

And that’s it! Once you’ve added some images (ensure you include multiple images of yourself for credibility) your gig is published!

Then you just wait.

How I Achieved 5 Star Ratings

The best way to get work is through getting reviews from clients. But, it’s difficult when you don’t have any clients yet.

The best piece of advice I can offer is reach out to friends and family. See if they need anything done. Then, get them to give you a detailed review.

But how can you maintain a 5-star review?

The trick is to over-deliver. Say you will deliver in 5 days, but deliver after 3. Give some extras within the order that they didn’t even think they needed.

You need to stand out. Especially at the start. So over-deliver on your work and make sure it is the highest quality.

Within the writing niche, i showed breakdowns of keyword rankings, search volumes, where i implemented them in texts and why i had used certain headings.

It was great. And clients loved the dedication.

What I Did When Work Was Slowing Down

Unfortunately, as Fiverr does most of the marketing for you — times can get tough when there isn’t a lot of work coming your way.

So here’s some things you can do:

  1. Stay on top of your inbox — ensure that you have a response time of 1 hour
  2. Stay online — whether it is keeping a tab open or installing the app on your phone. Clients can choose to filter their search to only those sellers who are online.
  3. Reach out to past clients — they never really know what they need. And the best thing you can do is reach out to see if they need some support for content. Maybe even do the work for them and come up with a content idea or concept.
  4. Bundles — offer bundles. 3 blogs for the price of 2. 2 for the price of 1. These bundles really help get bigger sales and more frequency.
  5. Gig Promotions — once eligible, you’re able to promote your gigs. A bit like CPC. Your gig is pushed to buyers inbox’s and pop-up — you only pay when they click on it. It’s a great way to increase your presence

Tips To Succeed On Fiverr

Fiverr is like a magnet with two ends. You’re either really busy or it’s like a ghost town. So here are some ways to succeed:

  1. Create multiple gigs — having just one only gets you one slot on the seller page. If you create multiple gigs, then you will show up lots more. For example, have one gig that is general e.g. write a blog post. Then create gigs to be more specific e.g. write a food blog post.
  2. Fill out your profile — your profile is the first thing that every buyer will see. Make sure that it is complete, detailed and shows off your personality.
  3. Images — there are certain requirements for your images. Sizing, amount of copy and whether or not to include your face, all plays into your ranking. Oh, and make sure that your image file is saved as a keyword. E.g. my blog writing image is saved as ‘ExpertSEOBlogWriter.png’
  4. Videos — Fiverr encourage you to include an introductory video on all of your gigs and on your profile. Make sure you do this! It will add to your credibility and set you out among the crowd. Most sellers on Fiverr don’t like showing their faces — which is fine — i hate it. But, a video of you explaining what you do makes the buyer sure you’re real.
  5. Over-deliver — i can’t say it enough. Always over-deliver for your clients. Especially when you’re starting out. Once you gain traction and more clients, then you can start to deliver what you offer. But when you are starting out — you’re going to be desperate for those 5 star reviews. This is a sure fire way of doing it.

Should You Diversify?

Absolutely! Why stop at just Fiverr.

We listed a load of marketplaces for freelancers just like Fiverr earlier in this post. Go and set up profiles. What’s the worst that can happen?

It’s all about marketing yoruself.

The more places that people see your profile, the more credible you will become and the higher the chance of you getting work.

However, it all depends on why you are doing it. For me, it was a way to make some quick cash and i hated marketing myself. So, i was happy on just Fiverr. Now that i’m transferring into it more full-time though, i wished i had set up and built a reputation on multiple platforms.
