Illustrating ‘This, That, and The Other’
character sketches and cover art
I enjoy producing illustrations when they are representing the literature of the imagination, for then they present a similar challenge to that of expressive art in visualising the initially intangible…
Here are selection of six such illustrations for This, That, and the Other, a series of epic fantasy adventure novels I am co-authoring with Zel Cariad, inspired by research into folklore and fairytales, fuelled by unbridled imagination. These drawings are executed with mixed media — pencils, inks, chalks, crayons — and are featured as cover art for the part-work now published by The Red Sparrow Press.

SMUGLY
Carla giggled.
“What?” asked Rietta with a quizzical grin.
“He’s cute!” Carla meant the floppy-eared cloth dog that Rietta had been cuddling.
“Oh, this is Smugly,” she handed it to Carla, “I’ve had him forever — supposed to have been ‘snuggly’, but I couldn’t say it right. So, ‘Smugly’ stuck!”
Carla touched the black velvet snout to her own nose and said, “Please to meet you. Smugly!”
