Im/Possible Planets
six : shot : equinox : creative community workshop
As there were no suitable six-shot submissions for our March exhibition, we leapt at the opportunity to showcase work from our recent one-day creative workshops led by Remy Dean and Theyla Cathbert. The workshops explored the overlaps of creative writing, photography, digital media, and very simple animation. They were open to all, regardless of previous skills or experience, and were held at several community centres.
The brief was to visualise a small area of found surface as a landscape and imagine it as the surface of an im/possible planet. Then, a photograph of the surface was digitally manipulated to create the illusion of a continuous sphere, which was then animated. During the process, the artists engaged their imaginations to think about what the conditions on that planet might be and what sort of life, if any, might thrive or barely survive on their planet. The workshop closed with each participant writing a paragraph to caption their animation — a form of flash fiction.
