Hello! Our Mission & Why We Started

Welcome to our first post on Medium!

We are The Silver Post, a mission-driven company in Boston, founded by Carolyn McRae and Charles Renwick.

Our mission is to reduce elderly loneliness.

WE IMAGINE A WORLD WHERE EVERY ELDERLY PERSON GETS A ROUTINE, MEANINGFUL HELLO FROM THE PEOPLE THEY LOVE.

A lifelong passion for serving elderly got Carolyn into many conversations where people would divulge their greatest secrets or struggles with staying connected to their grandparents, great aunts, etc. “I don’t reach out enough. It’s horrible. I feel so guilty about it” was a sentiment she heard countless times.

On the flip side, she saw the joy on an elder’s face anytime someone reached out to say hi. A phone call, photo in the mail, or visit would keep them cheerful for weeks.

How could this be? How could both sides of the story be true?

The question became “How can we mobilize families to do a bit more? How can we make it so easy for them, and still so meaningful for elders?” Carolyn conducted interviews with people considered to be potential users, and the idea for The Silver Post was born.

If you’re new to TSP, here’s a short video about how it works:

We’ll be back soon with more.

To start, we plan to write about the problem we’ve set out to fix, our learnings thus far, how we’ve bootstrapped, and how even the busiest of busy people can go about doing a bit more for the elderly they love.
