Sometimes, I don’t want to produce. I don’t want to write an article, do the chores, exercise, or finish something for work.

I just want to sit down and watch a YouTube video, or read a book. But then I find myself watching some Twitch livestream for over three hours, which makes me hate myself afterwards, because I could have done something more productive with my time.

Getting downtime is just normal, as well as important for your creativity. Nobody can produce 24/7. It requires you to have inspiration, a good idea and the motivation to put this idea into practice. And that’s not always the case.

But when you decide to consume, make sure you find the right content. Actually, reading books, watching videos, or listening to podcasts is vital for discovering new inspiration and ideas.

Sadly, we often prefer the funny cat video over the book about the theory of relativity. To make sure that doesn’t happen anymore, here’s what I do to avoid consuming, as I like to call it, “crap content”.

Out of sight, out of mind

You can’t consume crap if there’s no crap available, right?
