Owning your work

The Skill of Presenting

“The single biggest reason people are concerned about public speaking is because they worry what other people think of them.” This quote by Gary Vaynerchuk a blogger on medium.com explains the biggest problem people have with public speaking. In today’s society most people deal with some sort of anxiety myself included which makes standing up in front of your peers hard. But it doesn’t have to be as long as you own your work.

To own your work this means that you need to take pride in what you made and the work you have put into it. If you are unable to do this then presenting the material will be very complex. One example of this was in my personal life when I had to present a paper to all my class mates without a power point. This paper was about a culinary chef that I did not choose myself and so I really did not care about writing it. From this I did not get prepared for the presentation by not even looking over the paper before the speech. I ended up not being able to “walk into the room with humility” because I believed that I would not be able to do this presentation leaving my anxiety to rise. So I ended up clamming up and just reading word for word the paper full of grammar and spelling mistakes. In this example I did not own my work I put in little effort to complete the paper which lead to me presenting something that I knew little to nothing about.

Presenting and public speaking does not have to be hard. As long as you put effort into your work and except it as your own then everything else will come easy. Take it from me and my past life lessons during times to speak in public.
