Walking Route: Pembrokeshire’s Dale and St Ann’s Head

The Pembrokeshire village of Dale overlooks Milford Haven and, let’s be honest, its oil refineries. However, DO NOT LET THAT PUT YOU OFF. On a gloriously sunny day, of which Pembrokeshire seems to have several of, this is an absolutely stunning walk.

It has stunning scenery, stunning views, stunning wildlife, and stunning history (more of which later).

And because it’s a circular walk around the headland, I reckon it’s nigh-on impossible to get lost, which means you can spend most time enjoying the view rather than having to stop every ten seconds to check the map. (But do carry one with you, just in case).

This route starts at the public car park in Dale (charges apply — when I did this route in April 2024, £6 covered me for most of the day, and it was the best (and only) six pounds I spent that day).

From the car park (Grid Ref SM810058), leave the entrance, turn right and follow the road round to the right. There is a field on the right.

Take the signed footpath on the right, drop down some steps, and go through a kissing gate into the field and head diagonally left across towards the gate.

Take the gate and then turn right, cross the stream, and continue towards a kissing gate in front of some properties.

Turn left onto the lane and continue past Saint James the Great church. Where the lane turns left, continue ahead onto a track with Dale Castle on the right. Pass through a gate.

Follow this, and where the track turns sharp left, continue ahead through another gate into a field, and climb gently towards the next gate.

Take the kissing gate and join the coast path at West Dale Bay. Directly ahead lie Skolholm Island. To the right of that, in the…
