Note:

I walked this route on 28th April 2025 and this article describes the route on the ground as it was then. Always take a map with you when exploring the countryside.

The Eden Valley is a quiet part of Cumbria (and one that I’ve returned to recently to explore more). I’ve had the pleasure of staying in Warcop, and even though it is home to a large military training camp, it really is a lovely, peaceful village. (Check out the cherry trees by the information panel detailing Warcop’s path netowrk.)

The River Eden links these two villages, although it’s not possible to follow the riverbank tightly all the way, but there’s still plenty of opportunity for some water-side strolling. I walked this during April, just as the swifts and swallows have returned. Look out for the holes in riverbank where sand martins nest, and listen out for fish jumping.
