Do You Qualify for a Small Business Credit Card?
If you consider yourself to have a business, then yes, you qualify to apply for a business credit card. You don’t have to work in the corporate world. You qualify to apply for a business credit card if you are a freelancer or an independent contractor, or if you have a side hustle as an eBay seller.
While card issuers do require you to have an EIN, you may be approved for a business credit card using your social security number if you operate as a sole proprietor. Whether you’re approved or not will depend on your personal credit and your income.
Just be aware of the differences between business and personal credit cards. Not all consumer protections that you have with personal credit cards extend to business credit cards, as I wrote about in this article in more detail. Also, don’t use your business credit card for personal expenses, even if you don’t (and you really should!) have a separate bank account for your business; otherwise you risk giving up any limited liability protection you have.
