Kiku dared a glimpse down into the murky ocean depths as she kicked her legs and pulled herself through the water with just one arm, the other clutching the pearl tight against her chest. The distant glow had vanished, though she couldn’t say whether it’d sank back into the abyss or if the writhing shadow that pursued her had merely eclipsed it. The darkness blinked and gazed up at her with a pair of monstrous white eyes; she pressed her lips tight against the scream that threatened to expend her held breath and kicked faster, one after the other, making herself count each stroke so they wouldn’t devolve into a flailing panic. “Ghhggh!”
