His head spun at that sentence and he wanted to puke. He also wanted to put the car into gear and go run it over the bastard.

“You’re an adult, Jo! What can he do? He has no claim to you! He can’t keep you under his thumb against your will — you’re over 18. He’s not even actually your father!” Nate felt the anger rising up inside him against Jo’s stepdad. How could he have this sort of control over her?
“He’s her father. Mia’s. And I can’t let him have her.”
It took him a long moment to process those words. The first thought that flashed through his head was that Jo didn’t actually have a baby after all, that she wasn’t literally Mia’s mother, but that she was raising her as her own, to protect her from her abusive dad. But the thought quickly dispersed out of his head because the truth was pounding on his brain like a giant mallet.
