Honestly, I think I compiled this list because a skinny-jeans clad, beanie boy told me once, through long drags of an expensive cigarette, that women couldn’t write good lyrics because “they didn’t see the world the way men do” – “no offense,” he added, “I just like men’s lyrics better.” Which is the biggest bullshit.

Or, maybe, I just compiled it because I am so appreciative of these ladies and these songs, because they’re the kind of songs you find yourself listening to, memorizing, singing quietly, then screaming.

1. “It will make me feel better / knowing you watch me like the moon / Truth is that I am working / for myself and only me”

– Girlpool, “Cherry Picking”

2. “Wild women don’t get the blues / but I find that lately I’ve been crying like a tall child”

– Mitski, “First Love/Late Spring”

3. “I am full of shit not unicorns and rainbows / I don’t need a fucking boyfriend / I’m not letting you inside / I’m not eating you alive / I’m not sleepin’ with you”

– Daddy Issues, “Unicorns & Rainbows (Boyfriend)”

4. “But at least I know that the world is spinning when we’re tangled in the bedsheets / And at least I know that my mom is breathing when we talk on the phone / And at least I know that my house won’t burn down, down to the ground / Or maybe it will”

– Florist, “Vacation”

5. “If I had it in me, I’d tear me apart / And put aside the legs and the head and the heart /And here I’d stay wrapped in your arms / Without the mind or the feelin’ or the means to run”

– Huxlee, “Teammate”

6. “You made beauty a monster to me / So I’m kissing all the ugly things I see”

– Palehound, “Dry Food”

7. “To the man before me, I’m lustful and I’m lonely / Nah, that was the old me and now I know me”

– OSHUN, “That Day After”

8. “Now I hold my own hands in crowds of bands / And my friend Jan always says to me, ‘you gotta be your own 3 a.m.’”

– Adult Mom, “Be Your Own 3 a.m.”

9. “Ethereal, I’m in bloom / Torturing the afternoon / Simple things will light me up / I can imitate some kind of love / Or I could see it for what it is and stop kidding myself / We are not that alike”

– Waxahatchee, “Stale By Noon”

10. “I don’t know how / I don’t know how, but I learn fast / I don’t know how / but if I learn how, I’d be the best”

– Angelic Milk, “IDK How”
