Edgar Winter is one impressive musician. He’s been at it for over half a century and now in his early 70’s he’s still going strong. Here are 10 reasons why he deserves recognition for both the genius and talent he has gifted us with, and his unique persona.

  1. Invented strap-on keyboard — that’s right, Edgar invented the keyboard body strap early in his career.
  2. Drums in Frankenstein — If you’ve seen him live, you’ve seen him display his multi-instrumental virtuosity, including joining in on the memorable drum solo on this iconic rock instrumental.
  3. Sax — Yes, he plays sax too!
  4. Wizard — Tell me he doesn’t totally look like a wizard?
  5. Awesome Songs — Free Ride, Frankenstein, We All Had a Real Good Time, Tobacco Road, and many more.
  6. Johnny’s Brother — Yes, he is the brother of blues legend Johnny Winter (but they are not twins, a common misconception).
  7. Albino — this is one of the many things that makes him a very unique looking individual. Talk about a ‘White Wizard’ (Gandalf would be proud)!
  8. Frankenstein — Who doesn’t know the quintessential rock instrumental and its memorable “beh deh deh deh deh-deh-deh…” opening line? Undeniably one of the greatest rock instrumentals of all time.
  9. Hair — Look at that amazing head of long white hair (adding to the wizardly persona)!
  10. Health, longevity — Edgar is 72 as I write this and he is still going strong. Like fictional wizards, he seems to defy his age. Strong is his voice and sharp are his skills.

So there you have it. 10 reasons why Edgar is the “Grand Wizard of Rock and Roll”! Rock on Edgar, rock on.
