Blast from the past: YCP’s own Blockbuster … or at least something like it

Living in the 2020s has its advantages, but I can’t help but feel I’ve missed out on essential pop culture staples and experiences. That feeling of planning your Friday night around a quick trip to the Blockbusters down the street is one I wish I could reminisce on.

However, at about the age of 9 both the Blockbusters and 48 Hour Video in my town were gone for good. Of course we have streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+, but what if we crave an experience of walking through shelves, browsing several titles and grabbing the tangible DVD case?

Well, YCP has a resource that can help you fulfill your retro fantasy. Being a movie buff myself, there are just some movies the streaming services do not have, which frustrates me.

However, there is one place I can turn to which has a large variety of classic films all available for free. When going to the library, you may picture combing through shelves of books, but the Schmidt Library has much more to offer.

Left of the lobby is an area with a similar arrangement to that of Blockbuster. Over 5,000 DVDs exist on these shelves, from classics to new releases. Browsing the shelves is fun, but the library also offers a search bar on their site to easily look up film titles too. Better than the rental places of the past, there’s no fee and you have a week to watch the movies you rent.

I’ve found myself checking several movies off of my watch list thanks to the treasure trove inside of the library. So, instead of logging on to Netflix, give YCP’s very own Blockbuster a try next time you’re having a movie night!
