Why So Emotional? Because You’re a Writer

The writing gift — that makes us mad?

Writers spot puzzle pieces, connecting dots to shape stories. We uncover bigger patterns, pictures, and plans that most overlook.

Writers zoom in, like the trouble with Misty, who blows up your text message screen whenever she needs help. She disappears if you need something. But the value of a good deed (or story) isn’t about equity or fairness.

Conflict and struggle are the root of a good story, so she’s skilled at inspiring story ideas.

At 10:00 on a frightening winter night, Misty realized she’d fled the state without getting someone to cover her Holy Hour.

She’s shrewd enough to see writers love to be right, good, and true. So she pounced.

When everyone else ghosts her, she knows writers are The Rock readers rely on.

Storytellers save us, seeing signs when no one else notices.

So here I was, getting out of bed at 10:45 p.m. to honor her Holy Hour commitment (because we writers like to play heroes).

Besides, everyone else who counts on me (my beloved bride, our whole family, my readers, and even the dogs) was already (wisely) asleep.

The meaning of Spirituality: Seeing there is something greater than self, something more to being human than sensory experience. It’s believing in a greater whole we are each a part of — something cosmic or divine in nature.
