Year-round on-street bike routes ‘not feasible’ in wintry Calgary: Smith

We asked mayoral candidates Bill Smith and Andre Chabot how they would make Calgary more walkable and bikeable.

“It is what it is,” Smith said of the downtown cycle tracks. Because Calgary is a winter city, he continued, “there are times when it’s just not feasible to have 12-month-a-year bike routes. Maybe we could do some sort of a half year on, half year off in certain areas — because we still need to get around in vehicles.”

Chabot pointed to his record as a councillor, particularly his support of the downtown cycle track network, and said he would build on that. “We obviously have one of the most extensive cycle pathway networks, but it’s passive recreational cycling. I think we need to create more commuter cycle networks.”
