On Wednesday, a 14-year-old boy shot and killed two students and two teachers and wounded 19 other people with an AR-15-style rifle at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia.

This boy might tell you he has a right to that AR-15. He might even tell you about his “second amendment rights.” However, he’d probably have a hard time quoting the actual Second Amendment:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Now, move forward again, but just one year. A 14-year-old boy is sitting on the porch of his folk farmhouse outside Winder, Georgia. He’s been told to take care of Mother and little sister while Father makes the two-day journey to town for supplies.

This boy would never admit to being scared, like his sister says she is since she saw the Seminole yesterday. But he is worried. Several of these Seminoles — they might be Lower Creeks…
