E³ Q&A — Nitish Arora

Yes, I’m a boring guy

I write about

Mostly the boring stuff from my work: Technology, Consulting, and Finance. Ok, I admit, I don’t find these topics boring at all!

I aim to enlighten and empower the reader — but I am also learning the value of entertainment. All work and no play and all that. So watch out for some upcoming articles on relationships, adulting, life, etc. Just for fun and so that Malky McEwan doesn’t kick me out.

My favourite statistic

There are more kangaroos than humans in Australia (where I’m kinda sorta from. I’m Indian of course and I’ve lived mostly in India, but I was born in Australia and I live there now, or do I? It’s confusing — I wrote about it here).

This annoys me about Medium

That there are such few shortcuts and those that exist are stupid.

I mean right-off-the-bat, the bottom 2 don’t do anything.

What are these shortcuts for?
  1. Shift + F leads to this: F — a capital ‘F’, as one would expect, not a “featured image”
  2. Alt + Right-click does nothing for me. What is a “Focal point”, anyway?

Next, none of these are “shortcuts”:

Not “shortcuts”

It’s just how you create lists and mention people — are there other ways to do it? No. So how are they “shortcuts”?

Lastly, this is my favourite, there is a shorter shortcut than this one!

Not the best way to do this

If you use this method, you need to hyperlink anything in 3 steps:

Step 1: Highlight the text

Highlight the text

Step 2: Add the link in the box

Add link here

Step 3: Hit enter

The best way to do this is to use Cntrl + V over the highlighted text, and voila you get the hyperlinked text. You are welcome. I don’t know why Medium doesn’t tell us this.

I could go on, but Medium needs to up its game in the shortcut domain to make it easier for writers to write, commenters to comment, and readers to read. And it needs to update that page (Yes, I used the faster method here).

I predict

That AI will not change our lives that much.

This book changed my life

Nassim Taleb’s Incerto: Makes you view life completely differently. Stuff they don’t teach you in college (but should!). As a trained Economist, this made me doubt why I studied it.

My best writing tip

“Pity the reader! ”— Kurt Vonnegut

Stick to a single central idea — the whole article turns around this. Each paragraph supports or expands that idea while maintaining logical flow.

Remember that you write to be understood — keep your writing simple and your language easy to read. Five-year-olds should get your message.

I’m sceptical about

Everything.

My favourite life quote

“Nobody exists on purpose. Nobody belongs anywhere. Everybody’s gonna die. Come watch TV” ― Morty Smith

My greatest weakness

Kryptonite.

I still regret

Not asking that girl out in high school. How my life would’ve changed!

The last thing I googled

That Kurt Vonnegut quote.

I need help with

Making my wife happy. Goddamn it, marriage is hard! Any advice will help.

This is how my wife feels around me — oh no, she thinks I’m comparing her to a dog! No it’s just the emotion, not the photo, you’re beautiful! *Cut to 2 hours gone explaining this* Photo by charlesdeluvio on Unsplash
