Oooh, looky here, three thousand followers! Wowser, wowser!
Except it might be 2998 or less if you go check now. Every day people follow me and the count goes up, but the next day it has dropped again. Yes, a few obviously stay or I never would have gotten this far, but many disappear very quickly.
Why? Did I write something to anger them? Maybe, but more likely they expected a follow-back and — listen carefully — I don’t do that. So they left.
But why would you care if I do or don’t follow back? Most of the people who would do that follow thousands of people themselves. There is a big pub owner here who was following 60,000 people when I last noticed. Do you think he’s reading their stories? He recommends that you play the follow-for-follow game so you can be successful like he is. Really?
What does it mean if you have three, five, ten or twenty thousand followers? You get paid for readers, not followers. What does it mean if you follow that many? It means you aren’t reading them! I commented about that fact on one of the Big Man’s posts; he blocked me for that bit of truth.
