How We Decided to Bring A Baby into This World

Becoming parents is a momentous event in anyone’s life. You may give birth to a baby or choose to adopt but your life will never be the same. Having a baby is a big decision and hesitation and trepidation are normal. Can we afford it? Are we healthy enough? Are we even fertile? Do we have room? Do we need a bigger car? These are all reasonable, sensible, practical questions. They also illustrate that being in a position to choose to have children is a privilege not available to everyone everywhere.

People also struggle with moral and ethical questions. Many people wonder whether it is a responsible thing to do to bring another child into this world.

The answer to that question is a resounding yes.

Be a nerd and count the love

When my wife and I had turned thirty we felt it would be lovely to have children. My wife had felt that way years before me, but I scanned for risks. Couples around us were positive. They seemed to be coping well. Their children were delightful. Changing modern nappies is extremely easy. Babies are vulnerable but not fragile; you can hold them and remain relaxed.

We asked ourselves the question: is having a baby not ultimately a selfish act? Should we bring a child into this…
