I Asked ChatGPT to Be My Spiritual Teacher
The AI shared the truth about its limits and then lied to me
On a whim, I decided to ask ChatGPT if it would be my spiritual teacher.
To dispel any doubt, I wasn’t looking for an AI version of a spiritual teacher. I was intrigued, though, at what kind of answers it would give, especially since Deepak Chopra has recently advocated using AI for spiritual wisdom. He has even gone so far as to recommend it as a substitute for a traditional guru.
My plan was to probe its knowledge of various topics that are near to my heart and that I’ve explored at length over close to two decades. Instead, the conversation quickly veered into the topic of whether ChatGPT could truly be someone’s spiritual teacher.
ChatGPT was forthcoming that the guidance it could offer was limited and it couldn’t replace a human teacher. I appreciate that it was so forthcoming from the start.
When asked what I was interested in, I decided to go right to the core mission and asked about uniting with the Divine. But I coupled that desire with a question about ChatGPT’s relationship to that topic.
