A thought experiment

I’m making my famous soup.

Minestrone.

It’s bubbling away on the stove. The delicious smell circulating my kitchen is making you drool so much that it’s dripping down your chin onto your clean pressed shirt.

I take out a package. It’s wrapped up. Brand new. I carefully slit the seals with a knife and reveal what’s inside — a toilet brush. White. And it has that cellophane wrap.

I remove the wrapping, take the toilet brush to the sink and run the brush under the hot tap for two minutes.

Then I go over to the stove and stir my minestrone with the toilet brush.

Would you still eat my soup?

When my youngest child was three or four, he asked if he could help as I was making soup. I haven’t always been a responsible father but, for safety, I wouldn’t let him stir the hot concoction.

A few minutes later, I was puzzled by the disappearance of my wooden spoon from the table. A quick search revealed Jamie bending over the toilet bowl, stirring the water with the missing spoon.
