My partner, Chris, and I booked our flight from Belgrade, Serbia, to Paris, France, sometime at the beginning of January. At that time, we were in Germany celebrating Christmas and New Year with friends, but we were flying back down to North Macedonia after that and knew we wanted to travel around the Balkan countries.

Our flight back to Canada was from Paris, and we could have flown to the popular destination from any city in the region, but we chose Belgrade mainly because the flights on Air Serbia were the cheapest. The plan was set: we would fly from Belgrade to Paris on February 27th.

It wasn’t until later in January that I started seeing YouTube videos about the protests in Serbia. Of course, we were immediately very interested in what was going on since we knew we had to enter the country soon.

I did some research and watched a few interviews on YouTube to determine the country's temperature. So far, the protests seemed peaceful. If they continued to stay that way, we would feel comfortable heading across the border when the time came.

Why are there protests in Serbia?
