We walked around theses buildings, part of a Shaker community in Canterbury, NH, close to the VT border. Photo by author.

In April of 2024, a solar eclipse was predicted and some of the best visibility promised to be in Vermont.

Preparation for the Big Event

I looked at a map and booked a bed in breakfast in nearby Canterbury, NH. The borders touch and roads meander back and forth between the states.

We didn’t have the special viewing glasses and our host informed us that the local library would have freebies the next day.

I had ordered some from Amazon, and after repeated delays, been told they would arrive the following week. Who needs them after the eclipse?

Nobody.

The next morning, the library told us they were all distributed. They didn’t have any left.

Our host admitted they would not be going to the viewing party they had anticipated attending, so he gave us his.
