The death of a beloved companion animal can be one of the most heartbreaking and traumatic experiences we ever go through.

We have shared our lives and our hearts with them. We have loved them unconditionally and they have returned that love a thousandfold with every fibre of their being.

We have cared for them and nurtured them. We’ve protected them from danger, pain and anything which might hurt their innocent and trusting souls. To see them endure even a moment of suffering is unbearable.

When the end inevitably comes, we hope it will be gentle and that we will have time to prepare. We naturally want their passing to be as painless and peaceful as possible.

Euthanasia seems like an obvious solution. Having our loved one simply fall asleep peacefully in our arms when the time comes is our final gift to them, an expression of our love, care and gratitude for a life shared.

But for many animals and their human companions, these last moments have turned into a hellish nightmare of anguish and agony due to the incompetence of the veterinary surgeons administering the procedure.
