Why I Never Got Rich

If only I had been someone else

In the early 80’s I worked at a Tandy Computer store as the in-store support person. The job paid a miserly $5.05 an hour, but a cut of the entire store’s sales was added in and the total made for a quite decent income.

Unfortunately Microsoft and IBM came out with their addition to the personal computer fad and Tandy Computer soon found itself with mostly empty stores. My pay dropped to the base level and I could barely afford the gas to get to work.

I quit and started my own consulting and programming business.

I had little to lose and no startup costs, so why not? I traveled around and offered my services to Tandy and Radio Shack store employees for free if they would refer businesses to me. They did. The first year was hard, but very soon I had more customers than I even wanted and was making a lot more than I ever had as an employee.

I probably could have piled up a good amount of money if I were a different person with the same skills, but I am not, and I did not.

Oh, we lived well. Nice house in an upscale suburb, two new cars in the driveway, no money worries at all. But not near as…
