“That’s ridiculous, proper overkill.”

I listened to the conversation around me. They weren’t aware of my background in the Scottish police force and were discussing the case of a bartender who got drunk after work and decided to sleep it off in his car before driving home.

I’ve done it before. And you possibly have too. But never again.

The bartender was arrested for being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle.

Opinions swirled around, and people expressed staunch views without knowing the intricate workings of the law or the police. Sadly, like many in society, they all thought they could do a better job than the trained police officers.

Once everyone had played their cards, I showed my hand.

“Let me ask you all a question.

Say the police officers gave this man a warning and left him intoxicated and in charge of his car. And say this man decided to drive his car while still under the influence. And say this man killed someone you love. How would you feel about the police officers then?
