Are you struggling to find your next book to read? Our team can recommend to discover some interesting books about communication, digital skills, and creativity.

As specialists in communication, reading plays a vital role in our daily routine. It helps us write clearer messages, inspires creativity in our work, and allows us to expand our understanding of the world around us. In fact, we love reading so much that we’ve created our own library, BiblioSquare, which keeps on growing and turning us into true book worms.

Also, World Book Day (April 23) is right around the corner and it just wouldn’t be the same without some good recommendations. We know your “to be read” pile just keeps on growing — we’ve all experienced tsundoku, haven’t we? — so we might as well offer you our best reading suggestions to enhance your skills and spark your creativity. From communication fundamentals to the digital realm, take a look at these book recommendations and insights from some of our colleagues.

Communication beyond words

  • The Body Speaks — The silent language of nonverbal communication, translated from the Portuguese, O Corpo Fala — A linguagem silenciosa da comunicação não-verbal, by educators and psychologists Roland Tompakow and Pierre Weil. Ana Pedro, our Senior PR Specialist, recommends this book, noting that while people often focus on what is being said, they often overlook how it is being said. She finds the “nonverbal aspect of communication to be an important and fascinating topic as it can strengthen the credibility and clarity of the message being conveyed. This is something we emphasize during Media Training sessions with our clients and spokespeople.”
  • Did the Cat Get Your Tongue?, also translated from the Portuguese O Gato Comeu-te a Língua? from Portuguese Speech and Language Therapist Joana Rombert, is a title which could also be a great addition to your library. Although the book is intended for parents and educators, Ana believes it addresses “some of the most common challenges we face in our daily lives such as speaking, language, reading and writing.” Our PR Specialist has praised this book for inspiring us to continually improve as communication professionals, which she believes adds value to our work.
  • The Hidden Life of Trees, by researcher and forestry engineer Peter Wohlleben, is an unusual recommendation from Ana. Besides finding more about trees, as marvelous living creatures, she really enjoyed learning about how subterranean root systems act as channels for sending electrical impulses to help weaker elements of the species and prevent attacks from things such as plagues. “There is a lot of communication happening around us that we are not aware of.”

Digital impact on communication

  • According to our Senior Digital Specialist, Joana Veloso, the book Ogilvy on Advertising in the Digital Age, written by former businessman Miles Young, brings a fresh and contemporary perspective on communication and advertising, specifically from the point of view of the younger generations.
  • The Copy Book: How Some of the best advertising writers in the world write their advertising, edited by D&AD and TASCHEN, is a book that has a self-explanatory title, as Joana puts it, “but also provides insight into how one-liners in advertising were created and the context in which they were used. We get to understand these hooks in copy and, if applied to our day-to-day, this can help us comprehend what kind of copy works best”.
  • Joana’s final recommendation is Designing Brand Identity: An Essential Guide for the Whole Branding Team, written by world-renowned designer Alina Wheeler. She believes this book is relevant to various areas in Marketing and Communication, as it “encapsulates all the key elements needed to build a brand, especially in the digital era, and emphasizes that none of these elements is an isolated area.”
