I once had a blog with Wordpress and it was just too complex for me to keep in operation on a self-hosted site. It got hacked, it fell over when new versions of Apache and PHP and all that gubbins came out for my site, and every time it did the database refused to rebuild. If you don’t use Wordpress you might not know why a database is so important to writing, it was a little counterintuitive for me. I had always thought a database was used for numbers, but Wordpress uses a database to store all the blog posts and pictures and other stuff.
So I decided I couldn’t carry on with it, and have been looking around for a replacement for a while. That’s when I came across a great article that talks about various blogging options, and specifically says that Blogger is dead. The article is here.
I like the look of Ghost, but it needs me to install something called nginx, then edit lots of documents within my site’s file tree, and it just seemed like a recipe for disaster.
Then I checked out Medium and like the look of it. I now just have to embed it and — if that works-I’ll have a new blog.
