The Problem

Every year, roughly 88 million Americans seek help for a skin condition. Of these cases, 66% are managed by primary care physicians, who only get one week in medical school learning dermatology. Considering that there are thousands of different skin diseases and the majority of them vary across different skin colors and body parts, it is not surprising that there is a 50% rate of misdiagnosis among these cases.

What The Company Does

LuminDX is elevating the ability of every doctor around the world to quickly and accurately identify skin conditions, so every person can get the right care at the right time. They are doing this using their AI-powered smartphone app that has trained on hundreds of thousands of photos of skin conditions. The process takes less than 1 minute and does not require FDA approval.

The Market

It is estimated that over $90B is spent on skin disease diagnosis and treatment each year. Competitors include VisualDX and Google, but LuminDx already amassed the same number of photos VisualDX has acquired in 20 years in 1.5 years.

Traction

LuminDx’s AI software currently performs somewhere in between a primary care physician and a dermatologist in terms of accuracy of diagnosis. To improve this, the team is focusing on licensing images, which will get it to the accuracy of a dermatologist before they officially launch. The team was also part of the Techstars Boston 2019 program, MassChallenge in 2018, and Plug N Play Silicon Valley.

Founding Team Background

Susan Conover is a co-founder and CEO of LuminDx. She was diagnosed with melanoma 3 times, sparking her interest in dermatology and passion for empowering patients to get the resources they need to get healthy. Pranav Kuber is co-founder and CTO of LuminDx. He has over 10 years of experience in computer science and has worked at Intel, IBM, and ByteLight in software research and development. His experience spans from AI and data science to compilers and IoT. Lauren Tracy is the Director of Clinical Partnerships at LuminDx. She joined the team immediately after finishing her MBA with a focus on Healthcare Management and M.S. in Biomedical Sciences from Tufts Medical. Her previous work includes working in clinical research at Massachusetts General Hospital for 6 years and she holds a B.A. in Neuroscience from Colby College. Rich Kramer is the Vice President of Business Development at LuminDx. Rich leads image licensing from large organizations. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern and developed software at PatientKeeper before switching to a more customer-interfacing role.

What They Need Help With

LuminDx needs help connecting to primary care providers to hear feedback and test their product. They would also love intros to large dermatology groups and health systems for image collections. Connect with The LuminDX Team.
